If your game progress looks gone, do not start a new game or overwrite anything yet.
Your save may still exist under a different account, platform, game version, or cloud-storage choice. Take a moment to check what happened before you make changes that could replace the progress you are trying to find.
Start by protecting your current data, then check the most likely places your save could be hiding.

The Empty Save Screen
You return to a game you remember playing for many hours.
But when you open it, the save screen looks empty. Your character is gone. Your story progress is missing. The game offers a new-game button, and you feel like all your time disappeared.
It is tempting to press that button just to get moving again.
But an empty save screen does not always mean the save is deleted. You may be signed into the wrong profile. You may have played on another device. You may have opened a different edition of the game. A cloud save may not have loaded yet.
Before you begin again, give your old progress a fair chance to appear.
Protect, Check, Recover, Then Prepare
Protect the Progress You May Still Have
First, avoid changing anything that could overwrite an older save.
Do not start a new game in the same save slot. Do not delete files or uninstall the game just to “reset” it. Do not rush through messages asking you to choose between different saved-data versions unless you know which one is newer.
If you see any save names, dates, play times, or cloud-storage messages, take a screenshot or write them down. Those details can help you compare your options later.
Your first job is not to fix the problem instantly. Your first job is to avoid losing more progress.
Check Whether You Are Using the Right Account
Many missing saves are really account problems.
Make sure you are signed into the same console profile, computer launcher account, cloud-gaming account, or game account that you used before. If you share a device, check whether another profile has your old save.
Also check whether you played the game on a different platform. A save from one console, computer, or device may not automatically appear somewhere else.
If you find the correct account or device, open the game there before assuming the save is gone.
Check the Game Version and Save Location
Look closely at the version of the game you opened.
You may have played the standard version before but installed a different edition now. You may have launched a test version, a remaster, a sequel, or a separate platform version that does not use the same save.
Then check whether the game shows local saves, cloud saves, or both. If it asks which save to use, compare the play time, date, and progress details before choosing.
Choose the save that matches the progress you remember. Do not pick the newest-looking file automatically if it has little or no play time.
Use the Recovery Path That Fits the Cause
If you find your old save on another account or device, use that account or device to continue playing.
If the game offers a cloud save that matches your old progress, choose it carefully after checking its details.
If you cannot find the save but the game or platform has a restore option, follow that option before creating new progress. If you believe the save was deleted or corrupted, gather the game name, platform, account information, and screenshots of the issue before contacting the game or platform’s support team.
Recovery is not always possible. But checking carefully first gives you the best chance of finding what is still available.
Choose the Safest Next Step
- If the game shows no old saves at all:
Identify: you may be in the wrong account, profile, or platform library.
Fix: sign out, check the account you used before, and look for the game on your older device if you still have it.
Retest: reopen the game only after confirming the correct profile. - If the game asks you to choose between two save versions:
Identify: local and cloud progress may not match.
Fix: compare the play time, date, location, or progress shown for each option.
Retest: choose the save that best matches your last known session, then confirm your progress in-game. - If you installed a different edition or version of the game:
Identify: the version may use a separate save file.
Fix: check the version you played before and launch that one instead.
Retest: look for your old character, chapter, or progress after opening the matching version. - If the save appears on one device but not another:
Identify: the save may not have synced between devices.
Fix: use the device where the correct progress appears and check its save or sync settings before switching again.
Retest: confirm that the same progress appears after you safely reopen the game. - If you believe the save was deleted or damaged:
Identify: recovery may require help from the game or platform.
Fix: do not overwrite the empty slot; record the details of the problem and use the available support or restore options.
Retest: check whether a recovered save appears before starting new progress. - If the old progress cannot be recovered:
Identify: the best recovery may be a simpler fresh start.
Fix: begin a new save only when you are ready, using a short first-session goal instead of trying to replace everything at once.
Retest: confirm that the new game saves correctly before you invest more time.
Check Every Pocket Before You Replace What Is Lost
A missing save is like a missing house key: before you replace the lock, check every pocket, bag, and place you may have left it.
Protect your current data, check the correct account and game version, and compare save details before making a new start. Even if your old progress cannot return, a careful next attempt can protect the time you spend from here.
