How to Spot One Repeating Game Mistake While You Are Still Playing

Young Moroccan man and woman playing a video game while identifying the same repeating mistake highlighted in a glowing replay loop.

While you are still playing, do not try to fix everything at once. Look for one thing that keeps happening right before you lose.

Maybe you always run out of health. Maybe you attack too early. Maybe you forget to watch the timer, fall into the same trap, or use your strongest item too soon.

When you spot one repeating mistake, you can make one small change on your next attempt.

If you are not sure what a loss is trying to teach you, our Beginner’s Guide to Losing in Video Games (Choose Your Next Step After a Loss) can help you choose what to do next.

Notice What Happens Before the Loss

Imagine you are fighting a difficult enemy. You lose three times and think, “I am just bad at this.”

Pause that thought.

Instead, ask what happened in the few seconds before each loss. Did the enemy use the same attack? Did you stand in the same dangerous spot? Did you run out of healing items at the same time? Did you rush because you wanted the fight to end?

You do not need to remember the whole attempt. Look for the last important moment before things went wrong.

A repeating mistake is not proof that you cannot beat the challenge. It is a clue that tells you what to watch during your next try.

Use the Watch, Name, Change Plan

Use this short plan while you are playing:

First, watch for the moment that causes trouble. Pay attention when your health drops quickly, when you miss a jump, or when an enemy catches you.

Next, name the one repeating mistake in simple words. Say, “I attack during that move,” “I use my healing item too late,” or “I keep running into the same corner.”

Then, change only one thing on the next attempt. Block instead of attacking. Wait one second longer. Move to a safer spot. Save your item until later.

After that, watch what happens. If the change helps, keep using it. If it does not help, choose a different single change.

Observe and Adjust One Thing

  • If you lose to the same enemy attack:
Watch for what the enemy does right before the attack. On your next attempt, focus only on dodging, blocking, or moving away from that move.
  • If you keep running out of health:
Notice when your health drops the fastest. On your next attempt, play more safely during that part instead of trying to deal extra damage.
  • If you miss the same jump or path:
Stop rushing. On your next attempt, slow down near that spot and look for a safer route, better angle, or more useful timing.
  • If you use items too early:
Pick one item to save for the hardest part. On your next attempt, do not use it until that moment arrives.
  • If you panic when the challenge gets intense:
Give yourself one simple job, such as “watch the enemy,” “protect my health,” or “reach the next checkpoint.” Ignore everything else for that attempt.
  • If you cannot find one clear mistake:
Play one short attempt only to watch. Do not worry about winning. Your job is to notice what happens before the loss.

Let the Repeat Show You the Next Step

Spotting a repeating mistake is like seeing the same pothole on a road. Once you know where it is, you can steer around it instead of being surprised again.

During your next difficult challenge, watch the moment before trouble starts, name one repeating mistake, and change one small thing. That gives every attempt a clear purpose.
