Before you buy a game again, buy an expansion, or pay for a subscription, check what you already own.
You may already have the base game in an old library, a special edition with extra content, or access through a subscription you forgot about. A few quick checks can save money and help you start playing sooner.
Look in your game library first, confirm the version you own, and only then decide whether you need anything else.

The Game Was Already Waiting
You remember enjoying a game a few years ago. Now you see a new edition, a bundle, an expansion, and several extra packs in the store.
It is tempting to buy the newest option because it looks like the easiest way to return.
But then you check your library and find the game already there. You may even find that you own a version with bonus content, or that a downloadable add-on is ready to install.
The store showed you what was for sale. Your library showed you what was already yours.
Check your library before you let a sale page make the choice for you.
Check Your Access Before You Buy
First, Look in the Place You Played Before
Start with the platform where you last played the game.
Check your console library, computer game launcher, mobile purchase history, cloud-gaming account, or shelf for a physical copy. If you changed platforms, remember that buying a game on one platform does not always mean you own it on another.
Search for the game title. Then look for old accounts, family accounts, or email addresses you may have used before.
Your first goal is simple: find out whether you already own the base game.
Next, Check Which Version You Own
Once you find the game, look at its name and included content.
You may own:
- The base game only.
- A deluxe, gold, complete, or special edition.
- An expansion or season pass.
- Cosmetic packs, characters, maps, or missions.
- A subscription version that works only while your membership is active.
Do not assume that a newer bundle is better for you. It may include content you already own.
Write down what you have before you compare it with anything in the store.
Then, Decide What You Actually Need
Ask one question: Can I do the thing I want to do with what I already own?
If you want to replay the story, the base game may be enough.
If you want to join friends, check whether you need the same platform, the same game version, online access, or a specific expansion.
If you want new story content, make sure you have finished or reached the part of the game where that content becomes useful.
Only buy something when you can clearly name what it gives you that you cannot access now.
Choose Your Next Step Before Spending
- If you already own the base game:
Expect: that you can begin returning without buying anything.
First step: install the game and load your old save or start a new one. - If you own a special edition or bundle:
Expect: that some extra content may already be included.
First step: read the included-content list before looking at add-ons for sale. - If you own the game on an old platform:
Expect: that you may need to play there or buy it again for a new platform.

First step: check your subscription library and your account status. - If you want to play with friends:
Expect: that the game version or add-on you need depends on what they are playing.

Expect: that you may not need to spend money yet.
First step: return to the base game first and decide after one short session.
Buy Only What Opens the Door You Need
Checking what you own is like looking in your backpack before buying another one: you may already have exactly what you need inside.
Find your base game, confirm your edition, and match your current access to your real goal. A clear answer is better than a quick purchase.
